Lip Filler Aftercare: What to Expect Day by Day

·4 min read

If you have just had lip fillers or you are considering booking your first treatment, knowing what to expect afterwards can make the whole experience so much smoother. Aftercare is just as important as the treatment itself, and understanding the healing timeline helps you feel confident rather than anxious about every little change.

Day 1 is all about swelling, and it is completely normal. Your lips will look noticeably fuller than the final result — sometimes significantly so. This is not the filler itself; it is your body's natural inflammatory response to the treatment. You may also notice some tenderness, warmth, and slight unevenness. Apply a cold compress gently (wrapped in a clean cloth, never directly on the skin) for ten minutes at a time. Avoid touching, pressing, or massaging your lips. Sleep with your head slightly elevated if possible to reduce overnight swelling.

Days 2 to 3 are when swelling starts to settle, but bruising may appear. Not everyone bruises, but if you do, it is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about. Small bruises around the injection sites can last up to a week. Continue to avoid intense exercise, hot drinks, saunas, and steam rooms during this period. The heat increases blood flow to the area and can worsen swelling or bruising. Stick to lukewarm drinks and soft foods if your lips feel tender.

By day 7, the majority of swelling will have resolved and your lips will be settling into their new shape. You may notice the filler feels firm in certain areas — this is normal as the product integrates with your tissue. Any residual bruising should be fading by now. This is a good time to gently moisturise your lips with a hydrating balm, but still avoid any aggressive lip products or treatments.

Day 14 is when you can truly appreciate your results. The filler has fully settled, any asymmetry from swelling has resolved, and you are seeing the final shape and volume. This is the point at which I like to see clients for a review if needed. If you feel you would like a little more volume or a slight adjustment, we can discuss that at this stage.

Throughout the healing process, there are a few things to avoid. Do not drink through straws for the first 48 hours. Avoid kissing or applying pressure to the lips for at least 24 hours. Skip alcohol for 24 hours before and after treatment, as it thins the blood and increases bruising risk. Do not book dental appointments for two weeks after your filler appointment.

When should you contact your practitioner? If you experience severe pain that is not relieved by paracetamol, unusual blanching or white patches on the lips, or if swelling dramatically worsens after day three rather than improving, get in touch immediately. These situations are rare but important to flag early.
